Membership Benefits - Codes & Standards
NECA's Codes and Standards programs are
intended to advance the cause of electrical safety and help
improve the quality of electrical construction. NECA C&S
programs are divided into five major areas:
1. Regulatory standards
2. National Electrical Installation Standards
3. Technical publications
4. Inspector relations
5. Educational and promotional activities
External Standards. For nearly a century, NECA has played a major role in developing
the National Electrical Code, our industry's most important
regulatory standard. NECA is one of the only industry
associations with representatives on all 20 National
Electrical Code-making Panels (CMPs). NECA members also serve
on National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) subcommittees, and
on technical committees that write other electrical standards.
National Electrical Installation Standards. Developed and published by NECA, the NEISTM
are the first quality standards for electrical construction.
They go over and beyond the minimum safety requirements of the
National Electrical Code to define what makes NECA-member
contractors more professional than their competitors.
Specifiers and customers know that NECA "sets the standard"
for construction quality.
Technical Publications. NECA publishes educational resources and references that help
contractors
understand the National Electrical Code and other regulatory
standards, and apply them correctly on the job. These include
the National Electrical Code Tables, Illustrated Book of Code
Changes, Guide to Low Voltage and Limited-Energy Systems,
National Electrical Code Changes Video, and State Electrical
Regulations.
Inspector Relations.
NECA Codes and Standards takes a leadership position on
defending the National Electrical Code and supporting the need
for professional electrical inspection in states and
municipalities around the country. Uniform codes and
enforcement around the country offer many benefits to
electrical contractors who operate in multiple jurisdictions.
Educational and Promotional Activities. NECA Codes and Standards plays an important part of the
association's outreach to the rest of the industry. The
department maintains a high profile in the electrical
construction trade press, writes about regulatory issues and
new technologies, and puts on educational presentations for
inspector and engineering groups, trade shows, and industry
conferences. NECA C&S also publishes two regular newsletters
covering technical and regulatory subjects of on-the-job
significance for contractors, consulting engineers,
inspectors, and electricians. All these activities help ensure
that NECA and its member contractors are seen as the industry
leaders-not followers.
